Generic Installer for Dexrex IM Backup on GNU/Linux

Dear Dexrex GNU/Linux BETA Users,

As promised, the Dexrex GNU/Linux generic installer has arrived. It can be found here : https://www.dexrex.com/download/linux. While it is not as graceful as the Ubuntu installer, it gets the job done for a wide variety of Linux distributions. The generic installer comes with a detailed README file that should be read prior to installation; this is important and required information.
If you are feeling ambitious go grab a copy -- it is on the download page. The installation file and README can be found online on our website here : https://www.dexrex.com/download/linux

As always, we welcome and encourage feedback, questions, and bugs : contact@dexrex.com.

Thanks for trying the GNU/Linux BETA!

Below is information on supported systems, clients, and protocols.

===========================================

Hey! What if I don't run Ubuntu Linux? Fear not! We will be releasing a generic installer very soon. It is important we take the time with the generic installer to ensure quality and proper dependency control (as we rely on a few specific libraries that aren't rudimentary system libraries).

What we would like from you, the users: Feedback! Please write us with your comments, concerns, bugs, feature requests, and anything you can think of under the sun. The app comes with a GUI icon that does a few nifty things, one of those things (when it is clicked) is a "Report A Bug" button. Please utilize this if you have the time to send us feedback (or simply use our website www.dexrex.com). Thank you for trying the beta!

Dexrex...The Horse

In early March I took a trip to Kentucky to visit one of our Dexrex investors. I was looking forward to the trip because I haven’t been to Kentucky before, heard that it is beautiful, and was going to get to see a horse farm. Dale and Amy Hanson are the proud owners and operators of Penny Lane Farm, check them out at www.pennylanefarm.us. They specialize in American Saddlebred show horses. It was quite an experience to see so many handsome horses. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to ride my very first horse, and to my surprise I was told that I looked pretty good, regardless of not feeling that way. Being on a horse is similar to being on a carnival ride without a safety bar attached. I originally thought that if I got on a horse I would be galloping along at full speed like a Cowboy in the mid-1800s. However, to my surprise horse riding is quite difficult, especially when you increase the pace of the horse. I got up to about a “trot” and I felt like I was going to quickly fall off. It gave me a new found respect for people that can actually ride horses.

While in Boaz, KY, I was introduced to one pregnant horse that was expecting to have her foal any day. Unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to see her give birth but soon after my return to Boston I got a phone call saying it had been born, and to my great surprise they had named the newborn “Dexrex” after the company! I don’t think that many companies can say that they have had the honor of a horse being named after them. I haven’t seen General Electric or Verizon the horse running around...

Dexrex will be in the BlackBerry App World!

So, after jumping through all the hoops and waiting for a response it is official - Dexrex will be available for download in the soon to be released BlackBerry App World! Huzzah! RIM has not officially come out with a release date for their app store yet, but the rumor is it will be very soon. So, to anyone reading this who already uses Dexrex - Be sure to give us a good rating! And for those of you out there who have not tried our app yet - Look up 'Dexrex Extensions for Online SMS Backup' when the store opens.

Cheers,

Data Exporting

Exporting your conversations is coming soon! We’ve been talking about it for ages and it’s finally getting close. I’ve been working pretty exclusively on a new component that allows Dexrex to act as a generic data service (aka a public API, whoaaa). The first thing we’re going to build on top of that is a way to export your data.

I’m not sure exactly what form the exporting will take and I would love to hear opinions on the subject. The problem is there are no universal formats for IM/SMS conversations. One solution we are considering is a two-way integration with our friends at LogConverter.com, another is a well documented XML based format. Whatever solution we decide to go with, it will be the one we feel is best for Dexrex users. What good is a data export if you can’t read it!?

To the increasing number of people who are requesting this feature, rest assured, it is coming. And not worry - The feature will be totally free and without any strings attached, just like the rest of Dexrex.com :)
